ELIZABETH ROISTON CALLAHAN

Classification: Biography
Surnames: ROISTON, CALLAHAN, SPENCE
This is my husband's family. John Callahan and Elizabeth Roiston Callahan's daughter, Susannah, married James Spence (2) . Elizabeth was on the trail of tears with her family and was ill. She stopped in Green County MO (south of Springfield) with her daughter Sarah Jane Cannefax. Later she went to live with her daughter Susannah Callahan Spence at Fairbury, ILL. She is presumably buried (died probably in 1850) in the Spence Cemetery, just south of Fairbury, with no tombstone. The Spence family thinks she is buried next to her daughter, Susannah Spence.

I believe the main problem is that they kept applying to the Cherokees and George Haley's letter and affadavit very clearly stated that his Grandmother Elizabeth Roiston was of the tribe commonly known as "Chicksaw Alabama" . A small portion of the tribe owned land in northwest Alabama. I will find that letter and post it. The Callahan boys, David and John, traveled on with the Chickasaws about 1839. M. Spence
