I am searching for information on George Washington Dixon. He was born in North Carolina, likely around the New Bern area, around 1802. He lived in New Bern and worked as a merchant-tailor. In 1823, he married Antionette Hunt. The couple had 3 children - George, Jr.(born c. 1829), Charles F. (born c. 1832), and Hannah. Antoinette died in 1841 and George remarried in 1842 (the same year he went bankrupt) to Kiturra Gibson, a widow with two children. This marriage lasted 12 years until Kiturra's death.
Even before the Civil War came, the Dixon family (Kiturra's children from her first marriage had been appointed a guardian other than George in her will) disappeared. I have recently come across a lead that makes me think that the Dixons all moved to Alabama to start fresh. There is an 1860 census in Auburn (N. Division, Macon County) where a George Sr. and Hannah from NC are shown together with the right approx. ages and nearby a George Jr., wife, and Charles F. are living. George and Charles are from NC and, again, right approx. ages. We can follow George Jr. and Hannah from this family fairly well. George Sr. unfortuantely dies in 1863. Charles...it appears, heads north to GA. George Jr. and Charles though have a short time in the Auburn Guards and George Jr.'s granddaughter ends up living in Black Mountain, NC.
My question is, can anyone out there help me close the questions of if the Alabama family is or isn't the group from North Carolina?
