As far as I have been able to find in the several years since my exchanges with Dori Hooper, there was none of Cummings family left in the midwest after about 1870. The given name of Michael is not one I've found. The Cummings I was looking for who had come to California with my great-grandfather turned out to be a sister, Susannah, born in Canada, and married to a David Bean Hartsough. The Hartsoughs had a brother John Hartsough who was censused with them in Georgetown, California in 1860, but the Hartsoughs and Cummings left there in 1865 for other parts of California. I suspect your Michael is not a direct connection.
