What I know about the Cummings daughter who married Silas Sutherland is partly based on Doris Ross Johnston's Our Texas Family web page on Rootsweb. She has this Cummings daughter's name as Sally, and a brother Major Cummings. Silas Sutherland, his wife Sarah (or Sally) and I believe three Cummings brothers, William, David, and Major, all born in the 1790's went to Canada about the time of the War of 1812. I think they all came back from Canada about 1820-1830. William and Major and the Sutherlands were heading for Indiana, but Silas died suddenly and Sally remarried David White in Ohio on May 5, 1821, and they then settled in Sparksville, Jackson County Indiana. William and Major settled in LaGrange County, Indiana, based on census of 1830. Children from all three Cummings sons were born in Canada. David Cummings, my ancestor, went from Canada to Niagara NY, then to Michigan (Ypsilanti) then to Branch County, on the Indiana border in 1837 (based on Branch County History) and was in LaGrange with his brothers in the 1840 census, then returned to Branch County by 1850 (census) and died there. His son William Major Cummings came to California with a new bride and a Canadian-born sister Susannah Cummings Hartsough in 1853.
