Thomas Cashore – b Ireland 1829 – d Brooklyn, NY 1904

Posted: 3 Apr 2011 4:39PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Cashore, Gregory, Gaynor, Eybs, Fausel, Dibbern, Brady, Diffendale
Reason researching the Cashore(s):
THOMAS CASHORE is the half brother of my 3rd g-grandfa, JAMES GREGORY. I have used the info gained from research on the four Cashore(s) to place James Gregory probably in the county Fermanagh, Ireland. I hope to eventually use the Cashore info/ related names & the Gregory info/ related names I have to locate where in the county Fermanagh the Gregory(s) are from. In the meantime, I want to make my findings available to others.

I plan to later post the sources I have found on THOMAS CASHORE’s known siblings – John, Sidney, and Ann..

THOMAS CASHORE – brief overview
Born 1827 or Jul 1829 or 12 Jul 1830 (12 July from his obit, & 1830 calculated from exact age at death.) Married Frances in Ireland based on 1865 census listing indicating his first child, John Thomas Cashore, was born “at sea.” Believe married in 1846 based on 19 Dec 1846 calculated birth of the same child. Frances died 1875-1880. Thomas married Annie Gaynor 30 April 1883. (Annie died 23 July 1896) Thomas died 10 October 1904. Buried Evergreens Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings, New York. Early occupation = porter. Later occupation “puncher” (Manhattan directories – at least 1870-1900); Brooklyn directories and censuses - copper puncher, coppersmith, metal puncher.

Some sources on THOMAS CASHORE:

1855, June 23
Census 1855 Manhattan, NY, NY), seventh ward, seventh election district; June 23; lines 16-20; (FHL film 1018654): first family listed (two other families in same dwelling):
98 (dwelling number in order of visitation)- type: brick- value: $4500- 243 (dwelling number in order of visitation)
-Thomas Cashall [sic], 28, born Ireland, thirteen years in New York City, porter, naturalized
-Francis [sic] Cashall [sic], 30, wife, born Ireland, twenty one years in New York City [calculated arrival in New York City 1834]; alien, over 21 and cannot read or write [As arrived before Thomas would conclude married in NY, but first born, born “at sea” per 1865 census, which suggests Thomas and Francis married in Ireland.]
-John Cashall [sic], 9, born New York, son, 9 years in New York City
-Charles [sic; Charlotte] F Cashall [sic], son [sic], born NY, five years in New York City
-Francis [sic] H Cashall, 2, daughter, born New York, two years in New York City
Comment: Other families in the same dwelling: Charles Carver and family, and John Johnson, 26, born Scotland; ship carpenter, alien, six years in New York City; Jermina Johnson, 23, born Scotland, one year or less in New York City. No children listed with Johnsons.
Elizabeth Rin(n), wife of John Cashore (brother of Thomas Cashore) was born in 1819 and died 1901. Elizabeth's mother died in 1845 and her name was Alice Johnson before she married. Is the John Johnson in the same dwelling as Thomas Cashore, a younger brother/cousin of Alice Johnson?

1858, February 15 and 16
New York Times, 16 February 1858: "Cashore- In this City, on Monday morning, Feb. 15 Francis Henry, youngest son [comment: Another son, John, born 1846 or 1847 was still alive] of Thomas and Frances Cashore, aged four years, 11 months, and 15 days. The friends and relatives of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the residence of his parents, No 543 Water St[reet] this (Tuesday) afternoon at one o'clock. The remains will be taken to Greenwood Cemetery for interment.
Comment: Not found in on line database for Green-wood. Cashore's lived at 609 Water Street on 7 September 1852 when William James Cashore was buried.

Of the groom: name - Thomas Cashore; residence - Brooklyn; age -53; color - [blank]; number of marriage - second; occupation - copper puncher; place of birth - Ireland; father's name - John Cashore; mother's maiden name: "A Martin."
Of the bride: Annie Gaynor; maiden name if widow - [blank}; residence - Brooklyn; age - 35; color - [blank]; number of marriage - first; place of birth -Conn[ecticut]; father's name: "Thomas Gaynor " [not Hugh Gaynor]; mother's maiden name - Susan Dougherty. Signed by Thomas Cashore and Annie Gaynor.
-
Comment: 1883 marriage cert of Thomas Cashore to Annie Gaynor indicates Thomas Cashore's mother was "A Martin." "A" was the middle initial of James A Gregory, a half brother of Thomas Cashore. Perhaps “A” by itself is a family tradition.

[page 451- bottom]:
In the name of God Amen. I Thomas Cashore of the Borough of Brooklyn City of New York being of sound and disposing mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this life do make publish and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament as follows:
First After my lawful debts are paid I direct my executor hereinafter named to pay over to Evergreens Cemetery Association [where at least Thomas Cashore and his wife, Elizabeth born Gaynor, were buried] at the Borough of Brooklyn such sum of money as will keep in perpetual care the plot of ground in said cemetery which I may own at the time of my death and in which plot I desire the bodies of my wife Annie and myself shall be buried.
Second My household goods and furniture I give and bequeath to Elizabeth Difendale [sic] wife of Sylvester Difendale who now reside at 308 South First Street
[page 452:]
Third I give, devise and bequeath to said Elizabeth Difendale her heirs and assigns forever the fee simple of the premises known as no. 208 [sic] South First Street in said Borough of Brooklyn
Fourth All the rest and residue of my property of every kind and nature and wherever located I give devise and bequeath to said Elizabeth Difendale her heirs and assigns forever.
It is my desire and request that my punching machines be first offered for sale to Mr William H Steele of the Faunton [F or T at start] New Bedford Copper. Company at a fair valuation and should he decline to take them, I direct my Executor hereinafter named to sell them at public auction and give the procedes to Elizabeth Difendale.
I make this will in favor of Elizabeth Difendale for the reason that for a number of year she has been very kind to me in my old age bereft as I am of wife and children. and because of the ingratitude of my grandchildren to me for several years back and this will is simply in ratifaction of.the terms of a previous will made by me in which I gave my property to said Elizabeth Difendale and since the making of that will I have had frequent opportunities of appreciating her care and attention. to my comfort and my desire now expressed in this will is stronger than that previous will of giving to her all that I possess other than that provided in the first clause of this will.
I hereby appoint George F Alexander sole executor of this my last will and Testament hereby revoking
all former wills by me at any time heretofore made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal the twenty ninth day of November in the year of Our Lord one thousand nine hundred and two [sic].
