chas--
Wonderful info on John Clark Carlin and exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for posting it. If you have more you'd be willing to share, please email me: debrule@jps.net . I'm writing a non-fiction Civil War book in which Carlin plays a role.
Col. Carlin was in Gratiot Street Prison in St. Louis, Missouri from October 1863 until June 1864 when he escaped in rather dramatic fashion along with several others. Two others, Griffin Frost and A. C. Grimes both record his pressence there, both calling him a Colonel (I've seen some disputes about this).
The LDS database shows his marriage date to Marion English as Sept. 16, 1863 which doesn't leave much of a married life for the poor fellow.
I'll be happy to share any info I have, if you like.
