I am not related to Mathias Butsch, but have lots of family who were in the Mt. Angel area at the same time Mathias was. This is out of the Mt. Angel History book.
Mathias Butsch was born in Wurttemberg, Germany, on September 29, 1829, and came to the United States at the age of twenty. He was a lathe operator, following this occupation in the eastern United States and Canada before settling in Ohio and later Indiana.
On March 9, 1857, Mr. Butsch married Pauline Ashley. Five children were born to this couple during the next nine years. Pauline died on September 26, 1866. On May 5, 1867, Mr. Butsch married Agatha Kribs. One additional child was born in Indiana and three more in Oregon.
Upon coming to Oregon in 1878 the Butsch family lived in Roseburg for two months before moving to Mt.Angel. Here Mathias bought two hundred thirteen acres of land on the west side of the Mt. Angel-Gervais Highway. The sawmill that was built at once on the property provided the lumber for the first church in Mt. Angel as well as for most of the early building in the vicinity.
During a short illness Mathias had expressed the desire to be buried in Fillmore (Mt. Angel). The St. Mary's cemetery was purchased for $200, April 3, 1882, and the following day Mathias Butsch, aged 52 years, six months, and 11 days, was buried therein. He and Louis Schwab were the first interments in this cemetery.

From me: I've been to the cemetery in Mt. Angel. Mathias died April 2, 1882 and was buried April 4, 1882 at the old St. Mary's Cemetery in Mt. Angel. My relative donated the land for this cemetery.

Henry born February 6, 1863 in Ohio died October 9, 1937 in Mt. Angel, buried at Clavary Catholic Cemetery. Married Rosa Kirsch November 19, 1985.
