Saw your post about Gov. Broome of FL.
While looking through an old Florida Handbook, 5th Biennial Edition, 1955-1956, I came across James E. Broome. Have Broome cousins but have never tried to tie them into my family.
James, 3rd governor of Florida, 1853-57, was born in Hamburg, Aiken county, SC on 12/15/1808, the son of John and Jennette Witherspoon Broome. He came to Tallahhassee in 1837, engaging in a mercantile business until his retirement in 1841. He was appointed Probate Judge in 1843 by Gov. Call, a member of the opposing political party and served until his retirement in 1848. He was elected governor in 1848 as the Democratic nominee although
Whig camdidates otherwise prevailed, a tribute to his ability as a speaker. He was an early States-Righter and also was known as the veto governor, vetoing more Acts than any of his predecessors. He served afterwards as a State Senator. He had one of the largest plantations in the state. He was married five times. In 1865 he moved to New York City and died in Deland FL 11/23/1883
If this might tie into what you are looking for, let me klnow, I am here in Tampa, and we have a very extensive genealogy department at are local library, including marriage and death indexes for the whole state.
Have a 15 month old grandson I chase around all day, so don't have too much time for the library, but this might be the impetus I need to get started again.
Hope to hear from you if you think James is related.
