I have been in communication with skeerticat/Patti Schroeder and am taking the liberty of posting this new information we have found.

It seems Alonzo Charles Bates who married Lucy Blackmore 19 Oct 1838, Mosa Township, Middlesex County, Canada West was using "Charles" as his surname in Canada. So, the marriage record is for Alonzo Charles and Lucy Blackmore.

Also, there is an 1851/1852 Canada census record for Alonzo and Lucy Charles living at Dover Township, Kent County, Canada West, with children: Sarah J., Nathan, Mary A, William, Otis, and Admetha [sic: Adamtha].

So far skeerticat/Patti Schroeder and I don't know why he was using the surname "Charles" in Canada. Once he was back in the USA, in Wisconsin (1853 public land purchase record), he was using the surname "Bates."
