I hope I don't just add to the confusion for you. I am presently searching for information on my paternal grandfather, C.W. Bennett. My branch of the Bennetts had a tradition of passing down the name "Charles" as a first name for boys. My brother is named Charles as was my grandfather...etc... My father was born in 1898 near De Kalb, Illinois, so that means that your C.W. Bennett would have been born in the (probably) 1830's or so...? Is there any indication that the soldier, C.W. Bennett, was either Confederate or Union? As far as I know my ancestors came from Virginia and Maryland. That adds more confusion because the Maryland Bennett's could have been either Confederate or Union. Families did choose different sides in the war. I'd be interested in whatever you find out.
