This is a mystery that we are still working on,according to some Battles researchers,the brothers were there when Archibald died and they show up on the census,we are looking for the place that Martha Morgan Battles is buried,still no luck it is like she fell off the earth,and now James Monroes grave isn't where they say it is or the headstone that he is supposed to have is missing,I have copies of James Monroes military service records...no answers there.
I live in Etowah county also but have gotten a lot of help on my Battles and Hiltons from a descendent of James Monroe and Martha.
