The long and colorful musical career of William (Billy) E. Barnes, 70, stocky, good-humored old-time trumpet player and teacher, was ended last night when he died at his home, Martin Drive, North Olmsted, Ohio.
"Billy". Barnes was one of the members of the original Cleveland Symphony Orchestra and played solo trumpet.
It was his concert band that played the opening two weeks at Luna Park.
For the last 35 years or more he was vice-president and a teacher at the West Side Musical College, of which he was one of the founders.
He taught there only last Saturday.
A native of Pickaway County, southern Ohio, he passed his youth there, then went to Boston to study under Henry Brown, a noted trumpet teacher. After his graduation from the Boston Conservatory of Music he came to Cleveland.
Old-timers recall the Lyceum Theater, then on the site of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. Building on Public Square. Mr. Barnes played 19 seasons there.
In his day and he played in the orchestra of all the theaters in town, as well as many of the larger hotels.
For a short period he directed a band in Indianapolis.

He was a 32d-degree Mason and a member of Meridian Lodge and of Al Koran Temple of the Shrine.
For years he was a member of the Shrine Band.

Surviving him are his wife, Martha D.; two sons, Clifford P., a music teacher with studios at 3711 Euclid Avenue, and Merritt W. of Detroit, Michigan; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Dunning of Cleveland, Ohio and Mrs. Virginia Bailey of Bedford, OH and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be held at 3 p. m. Friday at the William R. & Roy A. Daniels funeral home, 15800 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood, Ohio.
