Hi, I am not sure if I can solve your mystery, but I hope I can point you in hopefully the right direction. I think your grandfather Ernest Albert Bagnall may have married in March quarter 1891 in Chorlton, to Charlotte Elizabeth A Herklots.
I have studied the 1891 census page for Ernest Albert and “Dot” in Wales, and I wondered if the letter “D” in Dot could possibly be a letter “L” which could make Lot, possibly short for Lottie? or Charlotte?
I found Ernest Albert in 1901 living with Mary Johnson in Bournmouth, but cannot find a Charlotte Elizabeth Bagnall anywhere in 1901. I found Ernest Albert in 1911 with your father David Ernest aged 4, still living in Bournmouth with Mary Johnson. I also found in 1911 a Charlotte Elizabeth Annie Bagnall, Teacher aged 47 and living in London, recorded as married for 20 years, and born in Bengal India.
I see that the birth of your father, David Ernest Bagnall was registered in Christchurch in 1906. I also found a death registered in Christchurch for Charlotte E A Bagnall aged 57 in 1920. The age of 57 in 1920 agrees almost exactly with the age of “Dot” in the 1891 census.
I realise that none of this is proof, but I think it would be well worthwhile to order the marriage certificate for Ernest Albert Bagnall, married in Chorlton in 1891.
