From what I am reading, there was a lot of recruitment of emigrants from Germany and some Alsatians jumped on board.

Some Alsatians considered themselves French, when forced to choose, and some others preferred to identify with German culture. For instance, the German colony in Texas had a lot of Alsatians, especially in around San Antonio.
