It seems that I may never know anything about my great grandparents as records are indeed almost non-existant. I will keep trying though.

Interesting enough for some reason, the cards from her funeral still exist - not sure how as her husband Harry was not the sentimental kind. There were tributes from all the clubs she was engaged in (she was community minded and highly regarded) but nothing from family say loving niece, aunty of etc.

You may be right about her not knowing about her father. My grandfather never mentioned his 7 half brothers and sisters born in England and he kept in touch with one of them - the others were sent to Canada and USA via Barnardo's after his mother took off with the lodger!! No wonder he never spoke much of the family.
