BRAVERY REWARDED.
During the floods in April of last year, when the Herbert River flats were swept for miles by a rush of storm water, Albert Cummins, Archibald Buchanan, and the wife and five children of
the latter, were drowned. Buchanan's home was about four miles from Ingham, and in the early morning of the 8th April it was observed that the place was surrounded by water, and the inmates were in immediate danger of being swept away. George Robert Rogers son of Mr. George Rogers, of South Brisbane who was then employed on the " Ingham Planter," set out with three companions In a punt to rescue Cummins and the Buchanan family. On nearing the house a terrible current was experienced, but the flooded out people were placed in the punt after some difficulty, and a start made for the shore. With the heavy burden the rowers could make but little headway, and after a gallant battle with the rushing waters the punt was swept into a pandanus scrub, and being dashed against the trees soon filled with water.
Cummins and the Buchanan family were swept away and drowned, "but the four brave fellows who set out to rescue them were good swimmers, and managed to reach trees, where they hung on until a boat took them off. Even then their danger was not over, for the boat was swept away, and there would have been other deaths to chronicle had the craft not been steered for a house the top of which was well above water, and from which a rope was cast, and being caught by the occupants of the boat they were soon in comparative safety. Another
episode connected with this event occurred yesterday In Brisbane, when Mr.G. R. Rogers was called to Government House and presented with the bronze medal and clasp of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia in recognition of his brave attempt to save life. Accompanying the medal is the certificate of the society, setting forth the reason for the bestowal of the honour
