A review of DNA results indicate that James Madison Hedgebeth from Nansemond County, Virginia, was not the biological son of William H. Hedgepeth and Francis Duke, but was the biological son of Joseph Dewey Sigler from Louisiana. William H. Hedgepeth and James Monroe Sigler (father of Joseph Dewey Sigler) were both members of different Confederate units in Louisiana, even though William Hedgepeth was from Virginia, but were both based out of Camp Murray, Louisiana. Other DNA evidence, include DNA matches from descendents of Joseph Dewey Sigler and his wife, indicate that son was father rather than James Monroe Sigler. It is not clear how William H. Hedgepeth got child back to Virginia. He was in Confederate army until he was captured in the Battle of Selma in 1865. Also of interest is that son, Joseph Dewey Sigler, fought for the Union Army and fought against the Confederacy in the Battle of Yellow Bayou in May 1864. Joseph and his wife did not marry until 1866 but analysis of DNA evidence indicates James Madison Hedgebeth is almost certainly descended from both of them. Really interesting story.
