Lewis Gardner was born about 1810 in Kershaw, South Carolina. Tradition says that he had a fall out with his father over a horse, and came to Georgia where he married Martha Sikes/Sykes about 1834 and they had several children in Monroe and Pike Counties where he reared in agricultural pursuits. He moved to Newton County, Mississippi prior to the Civil War, and divorced his wife in 1863, and went to Texas where he was said to have lived in Houston County for a time and then spent his last years in Johnson County where he died about 1880, but family lore says that Lewis died in a gunfight in south TX near Brownsville around the King Ranch in some sort of horse theiving dispute.
