In 1850 the Protestant Widows and Orphans Asylum was founded and in 1854 Mrs. Sarah Leath donated land for a building which was erected in 1856. In 1858 the name was changed to Leath Orphan Asylum. Dr. D. T. Porter, who was active in saving Memphis from the Yellow Fever epidemics and was involved in many other civic endeavors; was involved in the management of the home and his daughter made a large donation from his estate after his death and the name was changed to Porter - Leath Home in 1951. The Odd Fellows, The Gould Foundation, and others have helped the Home expand and continue over the years. Today it serves as a home for not only orpahns, but neglected and abused children, and offers day-care, after school programs, and family medical services. It is located on the original porperty (partly in the original and very beautiful 1856 building) at 868 North Manassas, Memphis, TN 38108. Thier telephone number is 901-577-2500. It is active and serving children in need; and I am sure they have extensive records on file.
