Thank, I will try some of your suggestions. I did find James in the 1880 census, I just took another look at it and realized he is listed as James Shaeffer, and living nearby is an Ellen Shaeffer and 3 children, possiblly a sister or sister-in-law. I have seen the James Sahffer in the 1870 and noticed that there is a Samuel Shaffer that was a laborer on a nearby farm, that made me think they were brothers possibly. The 1860 census lists a David Shaffer with Samuel Shaffer that matches the age of the Samuel in 1870 census, and a James Buchannon that matches the age of James Shaffer in 1870. So I am wondering if maybe he was adobted or just raised as a Shaffer.
