I have never seen that either. Maybe "maiden" was another term for "spinster" since she never married. I have one (male) who lists "Gentleman" as an occupation in 1870. I believe he was fairly well to do but he also owned a men's clothing store.

I too have come across numerous Boarders and Lodgers who where relatives.
