Hello;
Are you aware of the school(s) located in Knoxville during the time period you mention? A photo of my mother as a teen had the inscription on the back saying "Union High School" . She was born in 1907 and lived along Brownsville Road in Carrick while growing up so I started looking for information on the school. There was very little available but I had success when I contacted the Carnegie Library, Knoxville Branch. In 1938 the Woman's Library Club of Knoxville published a pamphlet entitled, "Knoxville Borough, A History". The librarian at that branch was kind enough to copy the chapter (VII) discussing the schools in the area and there was quite a bit of information given.
Basically the first structure was a single room in a two story structure located at the corner of Knox Avenue and Rochelle St. in Knoxville. A new building was built and dedicated on May 12, 1881 but it soon became overcrowded and an addition was added in 1897. The first high school was established in a room on the third floor of this addition.
In July of 1898 the following school districts united to form "Union High School"; Knoxville Borough, Mt. Oliver Borough, and Baldwin Township. They were joined at a later date by St.
Clair and Carrick Boroughs. In September of 1898 the school opened with an enrollment of 25 pupils and the first class to graduate consisted of four students in June 1901.
During the following years the growth of the elementary school enrollment continued as well as that of the high school. In 1920 the school board was searching for an additional building site and finally purchased a tract of land. Again in 1926 a building project was initiated because of overcrowding. However before it could be completed Knoxville Borough was annexed to the City of Pittsburgh. The last class to graduate from Union High School, Knoxville, occurred in June of 1927.
Hope this information may shed some light on your search.
Incidentally, there are quite a few McGibney's in my family tree from about 1800 onward and most of them lived in the St. Claire Twp/Baldwin Borough area.
