Notes for THOMAS COLES:

Source: Compiled by Eldon Gobble, eldon_g_2002@yahoo.com

The following was written by Daniel Edwin Coles between the years 1928

and his death in 1940.

About the year 1856 or '57, Thomas Coles, like any others of that day caught the spirit of the Westward movement, and he with his family migrated from Noble County, Ohio to Bartholomew County, Indiana, having traded forty acres of rich coal land in Southeastern Ohio for one hundred and sixty acres in Southern Indiana, the one hundred and sixty was all in vrgin forest, no timber having been cut on the whole farm. The trade was made without either seeing the others land.

The father and three or four of the older children came through in a covered wagon, while the mother and younger children came on the train some time later.

There being no house of any kind on the farm, they rented a cabin on an adjoining farm and occupied it until a cabin could be built.

The father and older boys went into the forest to prepare the logs to build a home while James (father of the writer of this article) was put to work cutting of small bushes and underbrush, making ready a place to build a cabin. The cabin finished and moving in early Spring, the next task was to clear some land and raise something for the family and stock to subsist on. The first two acres cleared contained twelve large poplar trees which were cut down and rolled together and burned, the only way to dispose of them at the time. The farm was also covered with fine oak trees which were cut and made into fence rails to fence the farm.

In a few years a large part of eighty acres had been cleared up and fenced with rails. A lane or double fence ran entirely across eighty acres of the farm so that he could take the stock from the barn to any field on the farm to pasture.

The original cabin burned in 1867 with its contents, then a hewed log house was built on the same site which stood until ten or twelve years ago when it was torn down.

Two famous soft water springs are near the site of the old homestead, these springs run over the top of the ground and furnish water for a good part of the neighborhood.

Notes by Eldon Goble: Certificate of Death #231 lists cause of death as senile diarrhea.

Document by Daniel Edwin Coles, his grandson, lists his birthplace as Guernsey

Co., Ohio.

1860 Bartholomew Co. census 785/791 lists his birthplace as Ohio. There is also

a check in the column that indicates he may have been handicapped (deaf, dumb,

blind, etc.) to some extent at this point in his life.

LDS files show his birthplace as Berks Co., PA.
