C. Gordon Jelliffe, of Naples, Florida, formerly of Columbus, Ohio, died October 24, 2011 at the age of 96.
Mr. Jelliffe is a 1937 graduate of The Ohio State University.
During World War II he served as a Major in the Adjutant General's department.
A prominent civic and business leader in Columbus, he was Chairman of the United Fund of Greater Columbus and was President of the Ohio Center Authority which created the Ohio Convention Center.
Mr. Jelliffe was a past director of Borden Chemical Co., Lumberman's Mutual Insurance Co., and The Columbus Club. He also served as a trustee of the Columbus Foundation, The Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, The Columbus Academy, and Defiance College.
As President of City National Bank and Trust Co., he was co-founder and Charter Director of First Bank Group of Ohio, now JPMorgan Chase & Co.
A pioneer in bank credit cards, Mr. Jelliffe initiated the first credit card system for the State of Ohio in 1966.
Several years later he was organizer and Charter Director of Visa USA and Visa International. He was a member of the Governing Council of The American Bankers Association and a national committeeman of the Reserve Bankers Association.
In 1971 he was appointed to a special committee of the Federal Reserve Board to study and recommend the electronic transfer of funds on the monetary payment system.
It created the national and worldwide electronic transfer of funds and the satellite transfer of bank credit and debit card systems. In 1969 Mr. Jelliffe was named the State of Ohio "Marketing Man of the Year" by the Business Administration College of Ohio State.
In 1970 he was President of the Ohio State University Alumni Association during the University's centennial year. Later in his career, Mr. Jelliffe became Chairman and CEO of First National Bank of New Jersey, the state's first national chartered bank, now Wells Fargo.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Carolyn Wolf Jelliffe.
He is survived by their children, C. Martin Jelliffe of Naples, FL, Joy Jelliffe Endo of Montclair, NJ, John B. Jelliffe of West Chester, PA, and Janell W. Jelliffe of Port Townsend, WA; by nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Carolyn Wolf Jelliffe of Naples, Florida, formerly of Columbus, died in Naples October 27, 2006 at the age of 89.
The daughter of Frederick L. and Ida Bour Wolf, she was born July 6, 1917 in Mansfield, Ohio. Carolyn was a graduate of Denison University, Granville, Ohio where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
In October 1942 Carolyn married Charles Gordon Jelliffe, also of Mansfield, Ohio, (Richland County) and for thirty years lived in Columbus.
In addition to raising her family she was active in numerous community activities including service in the Canterbury Belles of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Women's Board of the Columbus Art Museum, and as President of the Women's Juvenile Service Board.
She was an active member of the Garden Club, Ikebana Society International, and First Congregational Church of Columbus.
After retiring from BancOne, the Jelliffes moved to Franklin Lakes, N.J., where Gordon became Chief Executive Officer of First National Bank of New Jersey, now Wachovia Corporation. Carolyn and Gordon made Naples, Fla. their permanent home in 1982.
Together they traveled extensively, including many journeys to the Far East.
Carolyn is survived by husband of 64 years, Gordon Jelliffe; four children, Martin Jelliffe of Phoenix, Ariz., Joy Jeliffe Endo and her husband, Vernon Endo of Bermuda, John Jelliffe and his wife, Kathleen of West Chester, Pa., and Janell Jelliffe of Port Townsend, Wash.; nine grandchildren, Julie Jelliffe, Scribner Jelliffe, Christopher Jelliffe, Melanie Endo, David Endo, Amelia Endo, Jeffrey Endo, Carolyn A. Jelliffe, and David Jelliffe; and by her sister-in-law, Carolyn (Ky) Jelliff of Sun City, Ariz.
A memorial service will be held at the BOWER CHAPEL, 120 Moorings Park Drive, Naples, on Friday, November 3 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Denison University.
