Notations of this FGR state: "James Taylor, Emigrant, of Carlisle England. Settled in New Kent Co Va later called Caroline Co Va. Descendant of Earls of House of Carlisle England."
-Per FGR's received from Betty Jo Kindle in February 1988: "James Taylor I was b 1615, immigrated to VA in 1635 and is the original immigrant of this line of Taylor's. James Taylor I was appointed sheriff of New Kent in 1690; in 1702, a member of the House of Burgesses from King and Queen (Bagby's History of King & Queen p.257). He served as vestryman of St. George's parish and was active and prominent in the colony. He patented land on the Mattaponi and was an extensive land owner. The family history of John Taylor (11-10-1696) was from The Taylors in VA by Olive Todd Walker. Rana Fisher Rives states that Catherine, wife of John, was the daughter of Phillip Pendleton. See the Taylors of VA by Olive Todd Walker for the history of James Taylor II and his descendants. Research shows that the Taylor family to have begun with the name Taliaferro, Norman Minister of William the Conqueror, and was continued as Taylour in the County of Kent, England. The Taylor family is one of historic interest and dignity and closely associated with the development of this country and its earliest Colonial struggles. Among the English gentry who established American homes in the first half of the seventeenth century, the Taylors were conspicuous and won speed recognition. James Taylor in 1665 patented a large tract of land on the Mattaponi River in Drysdale Parish, New Kent County, VA and later in King and Queen County, VA, and patented a thousand acres in 1693. He made his will 27th April and died there 30th April 1698 and was buried on his farm near the present site of Bowling Green, VA. He married firstly Frances Walker; second marriage 12th August 1682 Mary Gregory, daughter of John and Elizabeth Bishop Gregory of Rappahannock County VA, and grand daughter of Roger and Margaret Thornton Gregory of Lincolnshire, England. She survived James Taylor and was living in 1747, age 80. From `Reminiscenses of Old Times in West Tennessee' by Joeseph S. Williams page 243, researched by Justine Erwin at Trenton, TN Public Library from the Taylors of Tabernacle (Brownsville, TN). The first of the Taylor Family in England is said to have been Taillefer, who came over with William the Conqueror, and led a charge at Hastings in 1066. For his great courage and service he was given large landed possessions in Kent County, which descended to his posterity. A descendant of this Taillefer is said to have received vast estates and to have been the ancestor of the Earls of Pennington. (Those are said to be the ancestors of the Taylors.) The name, which after several changes, became Talliaferro, is the family name of the Earls of Pennington, and is claimed that Ranger Taillefer (who lived at the time of Henry III, and whose estates were in Kent) had a son William, who was called ~Taylor of Schadochurst', and that his grandson, John Taylor, was Lord of the Manor of Schadochurst. These Taylors are said to be `of Pennington', and Pennington is only twenty miles from Carlisle, the port from which James Taylor the First, sailed to America. A seal ring, belonging to this James Taylor, is still in the possession of a branch of the family in America, and bears the same crest and motto as those which also belong to the Earls of Pennington. Investigations in England have resulted in satisfying those most interested that the Pennington and Taylor origin is the same. This information furnished by Rana Fisher Rives from: `Of Sceptered Race", Annah Robinson Watson."
-Note by BJ Kindle: "The James Taylor, immigrant, is stated to have been on the famous trip described in Virginia histories as `Knights of the Golden Horseshoe' sponsored by Governor Spotswood (or Beverly) in the mid-1600's."
