If city worker, try The Civil Record, published annually 1883-1967, on microfilm at NY Municipal Archives and NYPL. If pre 1923, available online at HathiTrust.org.

For NYC-area businesses, try NYPL and New York Historical Society, as well as NYG&B Record (publication). Or try searching World-CAT.
