I totally agree with you that you have to search all different spellings and different searches. I can also tell you that this is necessary and Italian names are spelled so many ways on census and clerks on documents that we would not have found anything had we just looked for Cestaro. My ggrandfathers family was in the Williamsburg, Maspeth area in 1895 later moving to Corona. Do you know if Evergreen st was ever 41st st that is now 98th st in Corona area?
You are right again when you say the best part of genealogy is finding it yourself. My sister went to St Johns Cemetery and purchased several interment records which was a goldmine of information We took my father up and visited his family plots and it was such a joy to see him so happy as he never knew his grandparents.
My ggrandmother was a Fiore. There is one daughter that married a Tassa and everytime I see Sasso I wonder if you have seen this in your family.
