Surnames: Lecuyer
I have seen some remarks saying that spooner was another name for Lecuyer. The reasoning is as follows. Spoon in french is cuillier(sounds like cuyer)or cuilliere. Le cuillier translated means spoon. The jump from L'ecuyer to Spoon would make some sense. There is a french surname that is closer
Lecuiller. I don't know if the Lecuyer and the Lecuiller families were closely related or not. L'ecuyer means squire, groom, carer-of-horses, etc.
Other spellings of the name on US census records (in Cohoes, NY) were Laque, Latue. Lagoy could also be Lajoie which means joy. The sounds for g and j in french sound like j and g respectively in english,
