A quick follow-up. I sent for the birth record and got it within 2 weeks; it just came today.

A side note is also in order. While I was waiting for the birth certificate, I was so anxious to find something (ANYTHING,) I started searching for a family tree with my father's sister on it. I found one and made contact with living breathing cousins, and they have lots of family records.
