Surnames: Peacock, Horton
My great great grandfather, Dr. Rufus Wiley Peacock, moved to Jersey City in mid 1870s from Haywood County in western Tenn. He was born around c1825-28 in N.C. Came with his third wife Anne McCullough (Grandma Hattie to my
grandfather) McCullough). He graduated NYU Medical College in 1875 - they have him listed in 1876 alumni book as residing in Jersey City. Still in TN in 1870 Census there. Rufus Peacock's daughter Mignonette (Nettie), married a Ralph or William Horton and they had my grandfather, Rufus Wiley Horton, about 15 Jul. 1881. The father died in RR accident (I am told) before his birth, and she died in
childbirth or soon thereafter. My orphaned grandfather was raised by grandfather, Dr. Peacock, and his step grandmother (Hattie) for his first 6 years, before he was boarded out to upstate NY. Anne Martha (Hattie) is said to have been written up in a newspaper as the "belle of Memphis."
Don't know when Dr. Peacock died, but she died in Jersey City 2/5 or 6/1913 - "sent south for burial." I'd like to find anything I can on Dr.Rufus Peacock, Anne Martha (Hattie) (McCullough) Peacock, Mignonette (Nettie)(Peacock Horton and her husband (Ralph or William Horton). i.e.
does anyone have access to 1880 Census for Jersey City, and are any of these people listed? All help appreciated. - Ray
