I have only a bare mention of the surname SKAGEN in a family history written for me by my elderly aunt Alma Greenslit who was born in 1909 and who lived north and south of Roundup between 1913-1924.
In 1920 the Greenslit family lived 16 mi. south of Roundup and 1 1/2 mi. from the main road (now Hwy 87) which runs between Roundup and Billings.
Here is an excerpt from her story which mentions SKAGEN:
"Early in 1920 we all got sick from the flu... We had very little food all winter. About all we had was some homemade bread, butter, and milk. Because I was so sick, Dick (her step-father) sent Harley (my father, who was 8 years old), to our neighbors Mr. and Mrs. SKAGEN to get a sack of homegrown
dried beans.
"We had nothing but a little butter to put in the beans. We were so hungry we ate them when they were still a little hard, and they rattled when we put them on our plates."
Since there is mention of SKAGEN neighbors, I assume they lived within a few miles -- as far as parents would send an 8 year old walking by himself. So, this family also lived about 16 mi. south of Roundup near what is now Hwy 87. Hope this helps you.
