I would start by finding out where people in that area sent their young to go to College in that time frame. I would check neighboring county records, I would try to misspell the name every possible way and search every available source for each spelling. ( I didn't see Hugins in your list, but you must have already thought of that.) He could have been a visiting relative of a neighbor. Was there any kind of Fort or Military near there?
