Surnames: Spurlock, Crawford
My great grandfather was John Thomas Spurlock, and according to the 1880 Jasper County census, he was a resident. His wife was M. Jane Goins. At the time of the census, he had one son (John William - my grandfather) and one daughter (Texas Alabama) John Thomas was born on 1/19/1842, but I do not know where. John William was born 7/5/1866 in Alabama. According to family stories, John Thomas and M. Jane were on their way from Alabama to Texas and stopped in Jasper County for the birth of their daughter,Texas Alabama ('Bama). They obviously stayed on for several years, because Bama married Tom Crawford while there. She and Tom moved to Union Parish Louisiana around 1888, and John Thomas followed with the rest of the family soon after. John Thomas was said to have been traveling to Texas with his brothers and their families when he stopped off in Jasper County. It is believed that the brothers went on to Texas, but it is not known if they stayed in Jasper County with John Thomas and moved on when he did, or if they went on to Texas without stopping in Jasper County. I am just beginning researching my Spurlock roots, and would appreciate any information on Spurlocks in Jasper County in the later 1800's and and descendants still there.
