You may already know this, but just in case.
The area (now a part of Mmephis) in southwest Shelby County, TN just above the MS state line was named in honor of Col. Francis M. White who owned land there and the train stoped at a station on his land. It became known as "White's Haven" then "White Haven" and has been for many year now "Whitehaven." It was annexed into Memphis in the mid 1960's.
Whitehaven was "THE" place to live in the late 1950's and it was here that Elvis Presley found the home of Dr. and Mrs. Moore for sale (which was called Graceland after her aunt, Grace Toof). The area has fallen on harder times over the years but is still a good place to live. My gg gf moved here in 1884 and my family has lived here on the same land since 1890.
I don't know how true the story is, but I have heard that Col. White died in Memphis and was so large that his custom made coffin was transported on an open flatcar to Grenada, MS where he had lived and was buried.
