Edmondson Cemetery is located on Main Street (formerly called Stateline Road) at the intersection with Northwest Drive (just west of I-55) It was founded April 1844 as Pisgah Presbyterian Church and Cemetery and later renamed for the Edmondson family. It is a non-profit organization;and a private cemetery in the sense that one must be related to someone already there in order to be buried there today. It is still an active cemetery.
I recognize the Powel names and can tell they they are in Lot #25. Benjamin Powel and his sister have what are called "wolf" stones, large flat stones that cover the whole grave. Both are broken and need repair. The smaller upright stones of the parents are very worn with age, I would guess they are limestone; as is the stone of Samuel.
From the book "Tales of Old Whitehaven" by Anna Leigh McCorkle we learn that Benjamin Powell (she says Sr. but I think that is a tpyo and it was most likely Jr.) went to California in the Gold Rush and died there. His body was brought back to MS for burial.
I serve on the Edmondson Cemetery Board of Directors and as it current "un-official historian" and will be glad to help anyone if I can. Many of the old records were lost over the years since everything has always been done by volunteers.
