In Ann Arbor a hundred years ago there were a half-dozen private hospitals, located in large old houses, with sunlit operating rooms, which were run independently by prominent members of the University of Michigan Medical School faculty. These included Dr. Petersen's hospital on Forest Avenue (which was also called 14th St.), Dr. Darling's hospital on S. Fifth Ave., Dr. Cowie's hospital on S. Division, beside the Kempf House (which specialized in wealthy alcoholic women from Detroit), and the Smith-Burrett hospital on S. Fifth Ave., a homeopathic establishment. It would not be surprising to learn that one or more of these places did a discreet business in maternity confinements and adoptions.
