I read a book on the Goulds online that mentioned that a particular Gould was not a freeman. To be a full fledged member of the Puritan church, one had to be a freeman. Gould was expected to attend services, and in fact was brought up on a charge that he had failed to attend the meeting one Sunday by a neighbor with whom he had a property line dispute. I gather freemen had more power and position within the church.
