Carolyn- do you know where they got married? Maybe there are church records that would give you some answers. There may be a marriage license or record of the marriage at the Archives in Annapolis, but I do not think they go back that far.

I checked the 1880 census for Caldwells in Emmitsburg and also all of Frederick Co. and there were none. Odd.
