I'm not sure how the story ended up in the Evansville newspaper! However, it's very common to find news from all opver the country in the most surprising locations, Just like today, any community newspaper usually carried local news along with state, national & international news. I'm not sure what exactly goverened any given editor's decision to run a particular story. Perhaps (again like today) the more lurid or sensational the storyu, the farther afield you'd be likely to find it?
Sometimes it'll be because there might be a local connection, even if it's just lots of folks who've migrated from that area.
I think that the sensational nature of a murder story might be a likely explanation for this one, though.
