Looking for info on the following family who appear in the 1880 census, St. Landry Parish, 7th Ward (which I think is around the Ville Platte area):
Edville Chacman age 61
Sarah (wife) age 45
George 13
Susan 11
Thomas 9
Homer 6
Isaac 3
My ggg grandfather was Josephville Chapman, bpt Joseph Edville Ortolon (his father was an Ortolon but he later took his mother's name, and thus carried on the Chapman name.)
I cannot find his son's family (Joseph Chapman & Emelia Saucier) anywhere in the 1880 census. And I know the early records of this particular Chapman family sometimes used the names Chackman, Chatman, Jacquemon etc. There has been family stories of my g grandmother Calesia Chapman was part Indian --- cannot verify this. And also the early Chapman ancestor Jean/John Chapman had two families -- his first one with Marie Fauvelle Cluseau (descendants) were listed as "mulatto" in the 1860 (I think) census, but the desc. of his family with second wife Anne Roy were listed as white. Could this "mulatto" also have meant part-Indian?
I would like to know if anyone knows anything about this Edville Chacman.
Thanks.
