Update: I am Helena's first cousin who posted above. In 2009 a male cousin took a DNA test. There had long been a family story told by our Grandfather, Charlie Short, that his dad, James R. Short had been raised by Shorts but his birth name was Rose. To be honest, I discounted it as family myth since the birth and death records for James R. list Daniel Short and Dianah Justice Short as his parents. Daniel died a short time after James was born. The DNA test revealed NO relationship with the Shorts through the male line, but we did match closely with Roses originating in NC. Therefore, this was not an incident (not uncommon) of cousins marrying. I have narrowed down the Rose family likely involved in the fathering of James R in Lawrence County, KY, but may not be able to provide positive evidence.
