In 2007 I was researching for my 2nd gr grandfather, John Howard Strode b 1863 in Mesheck Creek, Monroe, KY. I was told the Court House had burned in 1863 and probably would not find records and was surprised to find information from the early 1800's in the Index books. See other posts regarding research.
