Hello, Bob,
Edward Benningfield has done a book called Lincoln's Birth County in the Civil War. I copied from that book p. 146 because I was interested in my soldier ancestor (Wm. G. Thomas) found on that page. On the top of p. 146 I found the following. I can only assume the first part of this is about J.A. Vernon. Perhaps someone who has this book would verify my assumption. The top of p. 146 reads:

". . . was a Confederate soldier and likely served for the State of Tennessee. He and Mrs. Vernon had 13 children: eight boys and five girls. He died of stomach trouble accordiing to the Herald News. I have no details on his service. The will of Anthony Vernon was probated in Hardin County in 1846. It mentions a son named Richard and daughters Jane Enlow, wife of Abraham; Sally Williams, wife of Daniel; Polly Williams, wife of John; Betsy Bledsoe, wife of Benjamin; Lucinda Kennedy, wife of John; Fanny Goodin, wife of Albert, and Susan Patten, wife of Miles. The will also mentions a deceased son named Thomas that had children named Anthony, Elizabeth, Linsley, and Mary Ann. Perhaps J.A. Vernon is connected to the Anthony Vernon family." ~end

It will be good if someone can provide the data on the bottom of p. 145 to verify this is for J.A. Vernon. And perhaps there is more data that will be of interest to you.

Vernons are not my family. I did note that he is listed in the 1880 Larue Co census and that he is was born in TN along with both parents. He was buried in Salem Cemetery, and was married in Larue. Will send this addl. info if you don't have it.
