There were TWO original James Wards. James Ward of Rockcastle Creek in Martin Co was born in 1758 in Fincastle Va. Died 1848 in what would be Eden (now Inez) Ky. He was a Rev Vet with a pension app you can find by googling James Ward Rev War. He was at Battle of Bluelicks 1782 and seige of Bryans Station. Early Floyd Co. records show him owning many parcels of land on Rockcastle Creek in Martin Co. where he settled in 1810 with wife Elizabeth Williamson. He had a son James called "Bitnose". THESE ARE MARTIN CO. Wards. I have found NO evidence they were related to the JOHNSON Co. Wards but I'm guessing they were cousins??? I can't find his parents.
James (some say Lemill) Ward that settled near Offutt in Johnson Co. was born probably around 1755 in Russell Co. Va. D. about 1805 buried at Offutt in Johnson Co. It is unknown who his father was but it is speculated to be William Ward son of James the immigrant from Donegal, N Ire.
This Johnson Co. James Ward is said to have been married to Sarah Osborn. Don't know of any son named James from this couple. Billie Edyth thought Martin Co. James was their son but I don't see how Sarah could have had a child in 1758 then the rest of their children between the years 1775 - 1790. Sarah and James known children were. sons:
1. Solomon B.1775,(father of "Whitehead" James Ward)
2.Shadrack, (father of "9 Toes" James Ward)
3.William (father of "Bigfoot" James Ward.)
Daus were:
Sarah m John Chapman;
Polly m Alden Williamson ( bro of Elizabeth Williamson who married Martin Co. James Ward)
Abby described as "infirm"
So that's who the various James Wards were. If you see them owning property on Rockcastle Creek it is the Martin Co Wards. Almost all of his descendants are in Inez, Saltwell, or Tomahawk in Martin Co. ---- If you see River or any creeks now lying in Johnson Co. it is Johnson Co. Wards. Some of Shadrack's family married Mulletts and settled at the head of Rockhouse Creek in Martin Co. too. Those are James and Sarah family. Some are also near top of Spicy Mountain at Springs Knob where the Johnson Co. and Martin Co. lines meet.
