I have found several people in Johnson Co. Ky ( Ward and Ross) with the box COLOR checked on the 1850 census. There is no place to check "Indian". Under the COLOR box it has { white mulatto black ] Of course, almost everyone was white at that time in Johnson Co. because the Big Sandy area had few slaves. There were and are still several families with strong links to Indian blood from when their great, great, great, grandfathers were frontier pioneers in Virginia, as they sometimes took Native American wives. The Wards have always claimed to be part Cherokee. I was wondering if this mark on the census could be evidence of that connection.
