Thank you very much for sharing this! No, I was NOT aware of this deed and I had not seen any COE family historians citing it.

This was precisely the sort of primary evidence I was asking about!!

While the Cumberland County History indicates the marriage of John COE to a Nancy SCOTT, no date is given for the marriage and no evidence is provided. Moreover, since the marriage is alleged by most COE family historians to have taken place in Surry County abt 1806-8 and John COE was still resident in Surry County at the date of the 1810 Census, the idea that this marriage was amongst the records lost in the Cumberland county courthouse fire would seem to be simply rubbish, UNLESS this was John COE's second (or subsequent) marriage.

The published COE family history cited is a little better in expressly identifying this Nancy SCOTT as a daughter of Jesse SCOTT, of Surry County. And this seems to be fully supported by the cited Overton, TN, deed abstract which you generously provided.
