"Death Claims Mr. J. G. Sawyer, 83, After Several Weeks of Illness.

"The gallant heart of a gallant gentleman finally succumed to the infirmities of age Monday morning, at 12:35 when death claimed Mr.J. G. Sawyer, 83, at his home on Grand Avenue in Glasgow. He had been in ill health for several weeks.

"Mr. Sawyer was a native of Metcalfe Couty and one of its most prominent and beloved citizens. He served as Sheriff of that county from 1934 to 1938. He was a farmer by occupaton through the years and it was not until 1958 that he and Mrs. Sawyer moved to Glasgow after their house burned on their farm at Beaumont.

"Following his retirement, he spent much time with his hobbies of making cow yokes, growing flowers and raising gourds, the latter being an interest he acquired in his early life. Through the years, he and his friends - and The Republican - shared his gourd-growing prowess and used their result as a humorous "prediction" on the political scene. Mr. Sawyer opined that if the gourds had "straight necks," it was a banner year for the Republicans. If the necks were "crooked", then a Democratic landslide was in the making. He was active in the Republican Party all of his adult life.

"The foregoing was illustrative of a keen sense of humor which marked Mr. Sawyer as a wonderful person to know and claim as a friend. He was an optimistic person with a broad outlook on life in general. He enjoyed a host of friends and acquaintances in this part of the state.

"During his long and eventful life, his granddaughters brought him great joy and pleasure and he saw Miss Diane Sawyer as winner of the national American Junior Miss title and Miss Linda Sawyer runner-up of the Amrica Junior Miss contest and also one of the 10 finalists in the national Miss America contest.

"He was indeed a gentleman of the old school and will be sorely missed by all who were privileged to know and respect him. He was a man of high character and unassailable integrity.

"He is survived by his devoted wife, Mrs. Nettie Hay Sawyer; three sons, Hershel, Maysville, Ky.; Herman, Lima, Peru, and Erbon P., Louisville; six daughters, Mrs. Cass Walden, Edmonton; Mrs. William Mann, Burkesville; Mrs. Fred Smith, Glasgow; Miss Neva Sawyer, Cheyenne, Wyoming; Mrs.Walt Simington, Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Paul Brown, Cincinnati, Ohio; four sisters; Mrs. E. O. Sawyer, Zolfo Springs, Fla,; Mrs. Floyd Hay, Mrs Paul Smith, and Mrs. Cleff Leverige, all of Albany; two brothers, Homer, Elkton, Ky.; and Jess, of Albany, Ky.; sixteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren."
