My GGgrandfather was a Civil War veteran with a disability pension. When he died in 1872 my GGgrandmother took her two children ages 2 and 5 in 1873 to Pawnee County KS. I was told Kansas was offering Vets or widows of vets land grants if you stayed and improved the land for so many years. She returned in 1878 to Potter County Pa.
