I am searching for my Powell ancestors.
Samuel T. Powell born 9 Oct 1785 and died abt. 1871 in Wisconsin. He was married 8 Feb 1821 to Percia Gray/Grady. This family settled in Linn Twp., Walworth Co., WI. He and his wife are buried in the Linn Hebron Cemetery, Hebron, McHenry Co., IL.
According to a cousin, Samuel as “turned out†from his family when he announced that he planned to marry Percia. Apparently his family was not happy with his choice for his wife and the couple experienced many hardships. I am told that the Powell family was financially comfortable.
My gg grandfather Samuel T. Powell was in Seth Saxton's unit during the war of 1812.
The 1825 New York Census shows Samuel T. Powell was in Pomfret.
The 1830 Federal Census, Town of Sheridan, New York shows Samuel T. Powell was in residence at that time. It is probable that his children were born in Pomfret or Sheridan.
Their children are:
Percia Corrisande b. 20 Dec 1821, d. 14 Feb 1860 (last name recorded in family Bible at the time of her death is Mosher).
Mary L. b. 3 Feb 1823 in Sheridan, Chautauqua Co., NY. Married Freeman Martin Ross, who was from NY.
Amanda M. b. 18 Nov 1824 d. 17 Apr 1826
Lucina M. b. 22 Jul 1826. I have letters written by “Lucy†from Illinois and her name is Adams. I do not have a given name for her husband at this time.
Samuel T., Jr. b. 23 Jul 1827. Married Percilla Ann in 1854 in Genoa City, Walworth Co., WI. d. 16 Jan 1894 in Beaman, Iowa.
Elijah b. 25 Jul 1829. I have a letter written by Elijah, no date, from Oregon. In Lucy’s letters she indicated that he went to California in the mid 1850s.
Elizabeth b. 25 Jul 1829. She was known as “Aunt Libbe†and in the 1870 Federal Census for Town of Linn, Walworth Co., WI she is listed as living with her father and her occupation was listed as schoolteacher. She died in Columbia Co., WI and is buried in the Rosedale Cemetery, Town of Scott, Columbia Co., WI.
Jonathon T. b. 7 Jun 1831. Married Mary Matthews. d. 27 Feb 1870. He served in the Civil War in the 22nd Wisconsin Infantry. He had 2 children. He is buried in the Linn Hebron Cemetery, Hebron, McHenry Co., IL.
Charles Carroll b. 3 Nov 1834. He was married, but the name of his wife is unknown to me at this time. He served in the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry and in 1864 was in Louisiana. He had one son, Charles Carroll Edward, who wrote to Samuel T. Powell Jr. in about 1882.
Joel L. b. 5 Jul 1839. d. 17 Aug 1840.
Emily b. and d. 24 Feb 1841.
Abram D. b. 24 Aug 1842 and d. 9 Mar 1857. He is buried in the Linn Hebron Cemetery, Hebron, McHenry Co., IL.
I am having a great deal of difficulty determining Samuel’s ancestry. I would greatly appreciate help.
