Some clarification as I see I had some typos there in my previous message. Halvor's father died shortly after he left his son with our family, which is why he did not return. It was Ellert, Helmer and Bert who were drilling wells, and Helmer who ran for help after he helped get Ellert (not Elmer) up out of the well. Helmer wrote in his memoirs later that Ellert was so strong that he pulled himself up even though he was dangling upside down by his ankle. Bert's head was caught by the winch handle as it whipped backwards and he was knocked unconcious, so Ellert stayed with him. Those were the dangerous old days.
